A tool that does not end up in the gift drawer

Most promotional gifts get used up, lost or left in a drawer. Branded multi tools and pocket knives are different: they stay in the car, the toolbox or a weekend bag, and every time someone opens one they see your engraved logo. That is why they work better as a well-chosen item for a specific audience than as a mass giveaway.

The choice of model matters more than the size of the logo. A small pocket knife with a few functions is a light touch; a stainless steel plier multi-tool with a pouch is a year-end gift for a technical team or for industrial clients. In both cases, the logo works best small, in one colour and on the handle, without taking over the product. Check the mechanism too: a stainless steel blade that opens and closes firmly, without play, is what separates a tool from a toy. And with multi-tools, make sure each part can be pulled out without having to open everything at once.

What you can personalise

• Your logo engraved with laser on the scale, handle or clip: on steel it appears in a matt silver shade, and on wood or bamboo in dark brown. It is permanent.
• On plastic handles, pad printing is used. It reproduces your brand colour, but it wears sooner on an item that lives in a pocket.
• If the model includes a pouch or case, ask about branding it too: it gives you more surface area when the tool itself is narrow.
• The price on each product page includes one-colour branding in the standard area; a different position or different technique is quoted in your quote.

Before you choose: age, flying and each country's rules

A pocket knife is a tool, but it should be given with care. Only give it to adults and, if you are handing it out at an event, do it personally rather than leaving it on an open-access table. Rules on carrying knives vary from country to country, for example depending on blade length or the opening and locking system: for an international audience, short-blade models or tools without a blade are the safer choice.

The second limit is flying. Aviation security rules restrict pocket knives and blade multi-tools in hand luggage, and many airports do not allow any through. If event attendees have arrived by plane, choose a blade-free format or send the item to their office afterwards. Where they work well

They fit best in sectors where the tool has a real use: construction, installation, automotive, energy, agriculture, sport and outdoor.
